The Multitasking Paradox: AI, Workload and the Human Cost of Doing More

AI was supposed to make work lighter.

That was the promise, wasn’t it? Faster documents. Cleaner research. Instant summaries. A second brain sitting politely beside your laptop, ready to take the dull edges off the working day. And in many ways, it does exactly that.

AI tools can draft, analyse, organise, suggest, compare, clean up and accelerate tasks that once took hours. For organisations under pressure to move faster, reduce costs and increase output, this feels like magic. Not fairy dust magic. Boardroom magic. Spreadsheet magic. The sort that makes productivity projections look shinier than they probably should. But here’s the problem.

When work gets easier to produce, it does not always mean people are given less work to do. More often, it means they are given more work to hold.

This is the multitasking paradox.

AI does not simply remove tasks from the worker. It changes the worker into the manager of more tasks. One person is no longer writing one report. They are writing one report, checking an AI-generated summary, reviewing three automated drafts, feeding prompts into a presentation tool, responding to emails, validating research, correcting hallucinations, building a campaign calendar and trying to remember whether lunch happened.

It is not always speed. Sometimes, it is just spread. The employee becomes wider, not lighter.

This matters because human attention is not an elastic resource. It does not stretch forever simply because a tool can generate output faster. Every AI-assisted task still requires judgement. It needs briefing, checking, editing, contextual understanding and, most importantly, responsibility. The machine may produce the sentence, but the human carries the consequence.

And that consequence is where the real organisational risk begins.

We are entering a period where companies may confuse capacity with capability. Just because an individual can now touch more workstreams does not mean they can carry them all well. A marketing manager using AI to analyse audience data is not suddenly a data scientist. A junior executive producing a strategy deck with AI is not automatically a strategist. A communications lead running five AI-assisted campaigns at once is not superhuman. They are busy. Very busy. Possibly dangerously busy. The risk is not only burnout, although that is serious enough. The deeper risk is quality erosion disguised as productivity. Work looks complete, but thinking becomes thinner. Output increases, but reflection decreases. Decisions happen faster, but not always better. The organisation starts to reward visible motion rather than meaningful effect.

And, as ever, humans adapt to the environment they are placed in. If AI makes it possible to do more, many employees will do more, even when they have not been asked. They will fill the gaps. They will answer later. They will start another thread because the tool made it feel achievable. The workday becomes less like a structured road and more like a browser with forty-seven tabs open, all humming for attention. This is not an argument against AI, far from it.

AI is one of the most powerful operational tools to enter the workplace in a generation. Used well, it can reduce friction, widen access, improve decision support and remove genuinely unnecessary administrative weight. But it must be implemented with human reality at the centre, not fantasy productivity modelling.

The question for leaders is not simply, “How much more can our people do with AI?”

The better question is, “What should our people no longer have to carry because AI exists?” That is a very different conversation.

It shifts AI from being a workload multiplier to a strategic filter. It forces organisations to decide what work matters, what work is noise, what work should be automated, what work should remain human and what work should be stopped altogether. Because the future of work should not be a contest to see how many plates one person can spin before the floor becomes expensive.

The real value of AI will not be found in making exhausted people produce more. It will be found in giving skilled people the space to think better, decide better and create with more clarity. That is the next frontier.
